Mexico is a strategic partner of the European Union and partnerships with third countries are essential in addressing today’s global security challenges. I will propose to the Commission to present a recommendation to the Council to receive a mandate for opening negotiations for an EU-Mexico PNR agreement.
I count on the support of the Member States and of the European Parliament to help in achieving this important objective. I am already planning a visit to Mexico as soon as a mandate is given by the Council.
Moreover, I am considering a horizontal approach for cooperation with third countries on the use of PNR data in the context of the preparation of the European Agenda on Security, which will be presented at the end of April.
