During DA’s term, Athens became a protagonist, in order for the cities of the whole world to be heard for the first time on an international level. The “City-Diplomacy” is a proposal and an initiative taken by DA and adopted by Kofi Annan, who was then the General Secretary of the United Nations. This institution expresses the new role the cities are expected to play as the historical vehicles of universal values and of a culture of peace.
DA’s immediate response to the needs of the victims of the earthquake in Istanbul, the signing of new agreements between the cities of the world, as well as the Meeting of the Mayors of Southern-eastern European countries have been decisive moves towards the City-Diplomacy.
