Following an order by the Minister of National Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos, early in the morning the “DEFKALION” plan was put into action in order to comfort the victims of the earthquake in Cephalonia. The Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Michail Kostarakos is going over to Cephalonia, so as to coordinate the implementation of the plan.
According to the plan, which provides for the allocation of personnel, means and materiel of the Armed Forces, the following will be immediately transported to Cephalonia:
Two transport aircraft (C-130 and C-27J) of the Hellenic Air Force and a CH-47D CHINOOK helicopter of the Hellenic Army, which carry Armed Forces’ personnel (3 groups of 10 personnel and 3 doctors), two bulldozers, 11 10-person tents and emergency supplies.
The Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece will also fly in the C-27J with the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
The LST “IKARIA” of the Hellenic Navy, which carries one loader, two tracked bulldozers, one dumping truck, one trailing truck, one generator and one lighting tower with their operators, a mobile kitchen with its personnel, as well as a water tanker.
Moreover, a CH-47D CHINOOK helicopter of the Hellenic Army is in full readiness.
The Minister of National Defence is at constant contact with the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and he is briefing him on the implementation of the plan.
