The recent developments in Egypt cause a great concern since the democratic order in this country is in jeopardy. At the same time there always exists the risk to see this crisis expanding to the neighborly countries, where democracy is in the process of evolving in a difficult environment of generalized social and political instability.
The Minister of National Defence Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos met today at the MOD with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defence Mr. Derek Chollet.
Mr. Avramopoulos and Mr. Chollet discussed matters of bilateral interest concerning Greek-U.S. defence relations, as well as general issues, such as the situation in the South-eastern Mediterranean, Syria and the Balkans.
The Minister of National Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos received today in his office a delegation from the Ministry of Iraq, headed by the Ministry's Secretary General, General Mohan Hafith Fahad Al Frage, with whom he discussed matters of know-how provided by the Greek side for the organisation of the Iraqi Armed Forces. The Iraqi delegation is visiting our country following an invitation extended by the Ministry of National Defence.
The Minister of National Defence Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos made the following statement concerning the choice of the TAP natural gas pipeline by the Shah Deniz II consortium:
"It is a great joy for me that the TAP pipeline was finally selected, as this choice justifies our systematic efforts and diplomatic initiatives during the past year, since the Prime Minister assigned me, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, with the coordination and political responsibility of the entire process; a process that began in June 2012 and was typically completed this morning.
The Minister of National Defence Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos held telephone discussion today with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Kassoulidis and of Croatia Mr. Vesna Pusić, who called Mr. Avramopoulos so as to thank him for the excellent cooperation they had with him during his tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and wish him good luck in his new duties.
Mr. Avramopoulos also held telephone discussion with the Cypriot Defence Minister Mr. Fotis Fotiou, who communicated with him to congratulate him on assuming his duties.
The Minister of National Defence Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos received a telephone call from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu.
Mr. Davutoğlu thanked him for their cooperation during Mr. Avramopoulos' tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and wished him the best of luck in his new duties.
A delegation from the Shah Deniz II consortium and the Ambassador of Azerbaijan Mr. Rahman Mustafayev visited today the Minister of National Defence Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos and briefed him on the developments concerning the procedure of choosing, between TAP and the Nabucco West, the pipe that will carry natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe.
