I had constructive meetings today during which I commended Spain for its great efforts and exemplary European spirit in addressing the migration challenge.
Spain has full support of the European Commission in dealing with the increased arrivals along the Western Mediterranean sea route.
I informed the Spanish government of the additional EUR 3 million emergency funding the Commission awarded Spain to cover the cost of extra staff deployed in the South of Spain.
This brings the total of emergency support for migration offer by the Commission to Spain to EUR 30 million.
We agree that cooperation with Morocco is essential.
We need to step up our efforts and intensify support, especially when it comes to border management.
We are doing our utmost to ensure a speedy delivery of the €55 million border management programme for Morocco and Tunisia.
The Commission will deliver on its commitments and will not stop there.
We also need to engage more with the countries of origin and transit so that we can address migration at its roots.
Migration remains at the top of the European agenda.
Summit in Salzburg will be an important next step.
We need to work together because only European approach is the solution.
