«The new strategic challenges are reasonably the main focus of NATO’s interest and we all seek for new forms of cooperation, new policies and new solutions to reinforce the Alliance’s defence capabilities.
Greece participates and intercedes in these procedures through specific suggestions and positions which, in the final analysis, aim at reinforcing the Alliance, but also the role of our country as a stabilising factor in our wider region as well.
Beyond and above the crisis, Greece remains the most stable, powerful and stabilising factor in an unstable region which starts – as one may see – from Ukraine and ends in Tunisia.
During our talks we referred to issues, such as the security challenges in maritime environment with our country’s contribution to the Naval Rapid Deployment Force. I would like to remind that maritime protection is a top priority in the agenda of the European Presidency – which is exercised by Greece at present. These issues, of course, were raised also by the Greek Prime Minister at his recent meeting with NATO Secretary General in Athens.
Situation in Afghanistan was also discussed in view of the withdrawal of the Multinational Force.
As far as Ukraine is concerned, we focused on the democratic legitimacy, the respect of democratic values, and the rule of law. We support a sovereign, independent and democratic Ukraine, a prerequisite for Euroatlantic security.
Thank you».
