The recent developments in Egypt cause a great concern since the democratic order in this country is in jeopardy. At the same time there always exists the risk to see this crisis expanding to the neighborly countries, where democracy is in the process of evolving in a difficult environment of generalized social and political instability.
Egypt should not derail from the path of the democratization, while today’s state leadership should guarantee the unobstructed transition to democracy. The same way the political powers of the country should assume their great responsibilities in order to avoid a civil conflict.
From its part, Europe should remain steady in its policy of backing democracy, contributing with its own initiatives to the political normalization and the solid support of the democratic institutions.
