Today President Juncker gave a strong message on the Commission’s actions and support to address the refugee crisis. We are committed.

I noticed here, today, a strong support from you to our initiatives.

We need this support from the European Parliament.

We need it also from different States inside and outside the EU and we have to help them as well.

Sunday’s meeting is positive as States along the route all came at the table and the dialogue is open.

But: several used their own national narrative.

I have to admit there is still not a full “European spirit of cooperation”.

More cooperation, more Solidarity, more responsibility are needed.

We need actions; not only commitments. Now: implementation is the key.

This is also the message I get here: implement and do even more on border management, on protection of asylum seekers in an organised way and on cooperation with countries outside Europe.

The role of Commission has changed with this crisis: constant monitoring, dialogue, and support is needed. And initiatives in a more strategic way and scope.

This is also why the Commission work programme will have to give some answers in relation to borders, Dublin, resettlement, legal migration And relocation-already on the table-are key.

Because we cannot afford to fail.

Let’s not forget that the refugee crisis is used in multiple ways in the internal national debates, public opinion.

Only solution: to explain to people the need for a common approach at different levels and to demonstrate the supportive role of the Commission to Member States and affected neighbouring countries.

I am fully committed and ready to cooperate with you and the different countries directly involved- European, African, Asian countries-including on return.

I planned to go tomorrow to Pakistan but had to postpone because of the earthquake.

Dear Members,

The refugee crisis is a catalyst for more Europe. It is a test for the credibility of our principles and the capability of our institutions. And this is what the Commission is doing 1) by having put migration on the top of its priorities from the very first day;

2) by taking the necessary initiatives like the Balkan routes Summit last Sunday;

3) by standing by the Member States in need.

In order to give value and substantial content to the principles of solidarity, responsibility and by enhancing the unity of the Union.

Dimitris Avramopoulos
