From the concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz, created by the Nazi regime in polish areas annexed by Hitler, I am paying tribute to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On this soil of torment and unspeakable atrocities against humanity, we say: always remember, never forget.
It is out of this horrific memory that the cause of the European Union was born.
A dark page of European history and humanity is here, in front and behind us.
With my visit today, I want to underline the special significance of Holocaust remembrance in the collective European and universal memory.
This place reminds Europe and the world of what human nature is capable of, when hate, racism and intolerance prevail.
It reminds us our duty to teach and learn about what happened here, and never to repeat the same mistakes.
Voices of nationalism, extremism, and xenophobia are on the rise in Europe and around the globe, putting in danger the cohesion and unity of our societies.
In memory and out of respect for those who suffered here, we must never give up to make sure that no human beings suffer in the same way, ever.
Here we are reminded that peace is the main project of our common European endeavour, which we must continue to fight for relentlessly.
