It is with sadness that I learned of the passing of Anastasios Papaligouras, a public figure distinguished by integrity, political decency, and a deep commitment to the principles of parliamentary democracy.
As Minister of Justice, Minister of Mercantile Marine, and in every public office he served, he demonstrated seriousness, moderation, and a strong sense of responsibility—at times that demanded composure and institutional stability.
We served together in the government of Kostas Karamanlis, and I had the opportunity to see up close the quality of his character: a man of few words, with clear thinking, political civility, and a profound sense of duty. He did not seek confrontation; he sought common ground. He did not invest in noise, but in substance.
He was marked by his faith in the rule of law and his steadfast adherence to democratic principles, without extremes and without petty partisan calculations. He represented a generation of politicians who understood politics as a public service, not as the temporary management of power.
To his family, I extend my sincere condolences.
His memory will remain linked to a period of institutional seriousness and political responsibility.
