Statement by Dimitris Avramopoulos on the Passing of Achilleas Lioulias, 6/4/2025

With deep sorrow and endless love, we bid farewell to our beloved Achilleas Lioulias—an especially esteemed and significant figure in the academic community and in Greek society.

A scholar of exceptional training, Achilleas stood out for his rigorous scientific method, his broad knowledge, and his ability to convey even the most complex ideas with clarity. His colleagues admired the breadth of his expertise, the integrity of his character, and his tireless curiosity to seek out, discover, and share new knowledge.

He was a model of engaged citizenship, guided by a pure love for his country that infused his every thought and step. His dignity—especially in the most difficult moments of his health—was a clear reflection of his character and a lesson to us all.

Achilleas earned respect and admiration not only in Greece but also in Africa, where he devoted ideas and spirit, sharing his wisdom, experience, and unwavering support at critical moments for the continent.

Within his scholarly community, he left a mark not only through his intellectual work but also through the human relationships he forged—relationships built on mutual respect, cooperation, and genuine friendship. For his colleagues, he was an example of dedication, consistency, and love for science.

As a devoted family man and lifelong friend, he maintained warm, deep bonds with those around him. He was a rare conversationalist, guided by dialogue and consistently well-reasoned arguments that sharpened and refined others’ thinking, reminding everyone of the value of kindness, an open mind, and an open heart.

Achilleas has not vanished; he has simply gone ahead. He leaves behind a luminous memory.

By his side, the mainstay of his life, was his beloved Ria, along with his children and grandchildren, who loved him without measure—as he loved them.

We bid him farewell with emotion and boundless respect.

Achilleas, your memory, your warmth, and your love will remain the light that accompanies our hearts and our thoughts.
