With deep sorrow I learned of the death of Joseph S. Nye, one of the most influential scholars in the fields of international relations and public policy. His contribution to theoretical thought—particularly his introduction of the concept of “soft power”—left an indelible mark on the global understanding of power, diplomacy, and strategy.
As Dean of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard Kennedy School), he strengthened the school’s international standing and academic impact. During his tenure I had the honor to be invited as a Visiting Fellow—an experience that shaped my thinking, analysis, and career in a lasting and meaningful way.
We bid him farewell with respect and gratitude for his work, principles, and values, and for his enduring influence on global diplomacy.
I extend my sincere condolences to his family and to all who had the good fortune to work with him or study under him.
