Statement by Commissioner Avramopoulos on the situation in Greece

As a European and as the Greek member of the European Commission, it is my duty at this crucial moment to appeal for the continuation of the negotiations and for the exhaustion of all the possibilities to achieve an honest, fair and mutually acceptable agreement.

At this moment, the position of Greece in the Union is being called into question.

Greece can only feel safe and secure when its part of Europe’s central core.

It is the only place where the Greek people will find again the path to growth and prosperity.

It is true that there are no easy solutions.

There are no painless decisions.

We should never forget that Europe is not only about obligations.

It’s about responsibility.

It’s about growth and prosperity.

It’s about respecting human dignity and fundamental rights.

It’s about participating in a geopolitical zone of progress, stability and security.

Now is the time for decisions.

We must all rise to the occasion with responsibility.

In a spirit of national conciliation and consensus, the political forces of the country should share together the cost of the difficult decisions, but also the great responsibility of reconstructing the country.

Being united is the only way Greece can step on solid ground again and to look and move forward.

In front of these responsibilities and national efforts, no one should be left out.

And one more thing:

We should not divide ourselves into winners and losers, because there will be neither.

In this adventure, the winner must only be the nation.

Dimitris Avramopoulos
